Hand Tools Then and Now |
|
Since the days when the formidable sabre tooth tiger and hairy mammoths roamed the earth, man has been designing and making hand tools to help make life a little bit easier. Our early cave dwelling ancestors faced a frightening array of obstacles every day just to survive. Besides needing a way to try and defend themselves against fierce predators who hunted them for food, they had to try and devise a means of slaying animals to be used as food for themselves. Tools were clearly needed. There is evidence to suggest that these ancient ones threw rocks to slay birds and slower, smaller mammals for the stew pot; but larger, more aggressive prey and enemies were not so easily vanquished and something more effective than rock throwing was indicated. Gradually, these early people began to fashion hand tools to help them in the daily ordeal of living. Laboriously, they pounded and chipped rocks with another rock, making crude spear tips and knives to be used in self defense as well as hunting for food. Time marches on and through the days of the early Greek and Roman civilizations, new hand tools were invented and old ones improved upon so that by the Medieval days of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, a skilled artisan or workman could command a decent sum for crafts such as metal working, wood working, masonry and more. Of course, all of these occupations depended on a set of tools specific to the job and a working man prized his hand tools that allowed him to earn a living. Nowadays, power tools sometimes seem to steal all of the thunder, but there are still many applications where hand tools are needed and no tool box would be complete without them!
