Drill Bits---Sets and Accessories
What would any builder, whether a professional or a dyed in the wool DIYer, do without a good variety of drill bits?
The drill was one of the first power tools ever introduced and was welcomed onto the industry scene with much fanfare as well as a great appreciation of its time saving and efficiency advantages. However, it would be hard to get much work done with a power drill that lacked drill bits, or at least one drill bit.
What are Drill Bits?
You probably know all about drill bits---the different types and various uses. But, for the sake of those who are just getting their feet wet in the power tool pool, we'll provide a simplified, quickie lesson in drill bits.
First of all, what are they?
Drill bits are cutting tools that are used to make cylindrical holes. These drill bits are held in a power tool called a drill. The drill then uses axial force and torque to spin the drill bits, thus creating the hole. If you want to make a non-cylindrical hole, not to worry; you can get special drill bits for those, too. The anatomy of a drill bit includes the shank, which is the part that is clasped tightly by the drill chuck. The shank is at one end of the drill bits and the actual cutting edges are at the other end.
Drill bits are available in a range of sizes and shapes. That being said, perhaps the most commonly used of the drill bits is the twist drill bit. This is the one with the spiraling shaft. This type of bit has a point angle of 118 degrees, acceptable for use in wood, metal, plastic, and most other materials.
Types of Materials Used in Drill Bits
There are quite a few types of materials used in drill bits, depending on the application. Here are some of the commonly used material for drill bits:
- Low Carbon Steel Drill Bits---Used only in woodworking.
- High Carbon Steel Drill Bits---May be used on wood or metal.
- High Speed Steel Drill Bits---Used on a variety of materials, including metal.
- Cobalt Steel Alloys Drill Bits---A variation of the High Speed Steel, they can be used at higher temperatures and are frequently used on stainless steel.
- Tungsten Carbide Drill Bits---Extremely hard, can be used to drill virtually any material.
- Polycrystalline Diamond Drill Bits---The hardest of all tool materials and very wear resistant.
