Lubricants are necessary because they prevent excess friction of moving parts that will cause your equipment to wear out much too quickly.

About Lubricants

Lubricants prevent excess friction that causes heat, which is harmful to moving parts in industrial applications. Lubricants reduce excess heat by carrying the heat away from the moving parts, thus enabling a cooler surface of the working part and prolonging its life and usefulness. Lubricants are sometimes referred to as heat transfer fluids. Industrial lubricants are commonly prepared from:

  • Organic compounds
  • Synthetic compounds

The majority of organic lubricants are made by refining petroleum substances and synthetic lubricants consist of chemical compounds that are made via a variety of chemical processes that use certain additives for improved performance and lubricity.
Generally speaking, you will find lubricants in three physical states:

1.    Liquid
2.    Semi-liquid
3.    Solid

Some commonly used liquid lubricants are motor oils, marine oils, turbine oils, gear oils and others like these. A couple of examples of semi-liquid lubricants are grease and Vaseline, or petroleum jelly. Graphite is the most widely used of all solid lubricants, with graphite powder being used for lubrication between the various moving parts of different types of machinery. For the most part, industrial lubricants consist of:

  • Metal working fluids
  • Cutting fluids

Perhaps the largest and most widely used application of industrial lubricants are the motor oils, which are frequently used in motor vehicles and the automotive industry, as well as internal combustion engines to provide enhanced performance, protection, and longer life. This all adds up to a substantial savings of money as you won't have to constantly be replacing parts that have worn out due to excess heat and friction caused by not enough lubricity.

The type of machinery you are using will dictate the type of lubricants you will need to keep everything running smoothly. For instance, metal working fluids are lubricants specially produced for use in metal working, glass, and cutting industries.
