More about Scaffold

Using a scaffold makes it possible to work on hard to reach areas such as the eaves or roofs of houses and many other high places. Not only does using a scaffold make it possible to work at heights, but it also makes it much safer.

What is a Scaffold?

A scaffold is basically an elevated platform that supports workers and materials. In speaking of a scaffold, it refers to a specific type of assembly structure that is most commonly of a temporary nature and primarily used to support workers and materials while they build or repair a structure. A scaffold must be of sturdy construction and connections of frames and planks should be made with heavy duty bolts and couplers. Bolts and couplers are available in many forms, and the ones you use should depend on the size and shape of the desired framework of the scaffold. Here are some of the different kinds of scaffold:

  • The independent or birdcage scaffold
  • The single pole scaffold
  • The suspended or swing stage scaffold
  • The cantilever scaffold
  • The hanging bracket scaffold

To insure maximum safety, a scaffold should be assembled according to the manufacturer's instructions, as well as the scaffold plan. Anyone doing scaffolding work more than 12 feet above the ground may be required to hold a training and competency certificate. Working on a scaffold can be hazardous. In fact, statistics say that about one-third of industrial fatalities are caused from falls. Besides the potential for falls; injuries and fatalities may occur due to working too close to power lines, mixing and matching components, scaffold collapse and falling objects.

When shopping for a scaffold, you need to consider the application you have in mind for it. For example, look at the specified building's design, shape, and location. The scaffold's ability to adapt to the structure's contours should be taken into consideration, especially if a modular scaffold is being used. Perhaps most importantly, the purpose for which the scaffold will be used should be considered.

Never lose sight of the fact that someone's life may depend on the scaffold used and choose accordingly!
